The Bear
I've noticed a phenomenon when I'm running a longer distance. The Bear comes out. Let me explain after the jump.
At some point on the route and it can be earlier or later depending on my training, I start involuntarily growling like a bear. It seems to emanate from the middle of my chest and just avoid my vocal chords however. Its a rumbling huur, huur and sounds like a growl mixed with a drowning man gasping for air. I imagine it terrifies anyone who happens to be running close to me.
Its a sound that I just can't seem to make at will but only when exerting myself and knackered. I've tried to do it now sat at my desk and its only resulting in heavy breathing, which is terrifying in a different way. If I ever get a chance, I'll record it and share it with you.
Maybe its getting in touch with something primal, maybe I'm close to collapse and its my lungs giving up. Either way, when it happens it happens it makes me smile and helps me keep going. We can't let the bear down now can we.
And on the off chance that there is a real bear in your race use these helpful tips to get away.

That is so weird, I wonder what it is? You should definitely record it though, that would be brilliant.
